IGMS supports the Fletcher School's Fifth Annual Opening Arctic Conference

The Institute of Global Maritime Studies proudly sponsored the Fletcher School's Fifth Annual Opening Arctic Conference. The theme of sustainability and opportunity in the Arctic brought together almost 200 participants, making the conference one of the largest at the Fletcher School. It featured high level policy makers, business leaders, and academics.

Ambassador Mark Brzezinski came on behalf of the White House to outline President Obama's Arctic vision, and the US chairmanship of the Arctic Council. As the Executive Director of U.S. Arctic Executive Steering Committee, he noted how the United States has worked to ensure long term engagement in the Arctic beyond its chairmanship.

Finland's Ambassador Hannu Halinen also attended, representing Finland's upcoming chairmanship of the Arctic Council. Ms. Susan Harper, Director General and Senior Arctic Official, Global Affairs Canada, represented Canada's preceding Arctic Council chairmanship.Ambassador Kazuko Shiraishi, Ambassador in Charge of Arctic Affairs, Japan, brought a wider perspective to the diplomatic challenges and interests in the Arctic.

The conference brought Mayor Madeleine Redfern of Iqaluit, Nunavut to give an on the ground perspective of Arctic development challenges. Tero Vauraste, President and CEO of Arctia Shipping Ltd and Vice Chair of Arctic Economic Council spoke about the business opportunities in the Arctic.

IGMS's own President Rocky Weitz moderated a panel on business in the Arctic, as well as serving as a faculty advisor to the conference. Senior Fellow Caroline Troein also served as an advisor to the conference. Nathan Cohen-Fournier, a Research Fellow with the Institute, was part of the student organizing team.
