Daniel Finamore, Ph.D. serves as a Board Director at the Institute for Global Maritime Studies. He is the Russell W. Knight Curator of Maritime Art and History at the Peabody Essex Museum, where he has organized over fifteen exhibitions. He holds a BA in anthropology from Vassar College and an MA and PhD from Boston University where he studied archaeology. He was recognized with an award from the Society for American Archaeology for an outstanding dissertation. Finamore has received grants from a diverse range of funders for his research and exhibition projects, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Arts.

He has written over 40 articles and chapters for academic and popular publications, and is the author and/or editor of five books, including Capturing Poseidon: Photographic Encounters with the Sea (University of Washington Press, 1999), Maritime History as World History (University Press of Florida, 2004), most recently Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea (Yale University Press, 2010). Finamore is also an honorary member of the Salem Marine Society. He lectures internationally on the art and artifacts of the maritime world and appears regularly in maritime-related television documentaries and news shows.
