Abstract:
A seminar studying the world’s “newest ocean” as source, avenue, and arena of interaction. In this rapidly changing region, we examine economic, strategic, and cultural contexts with special attention to environmental concerns. Within an Arctic context, students will be encouraged to pursue their primary intellectual interests whatever they may be. The course is without formal prerequisite although some background in maritime studies is strongly desirable. Course format is both lecture and discussion.

This summer we invested a modest amount of IGMS money in a summer intern who was extremely helpful in finding materials for new course (seminar) in the International Relations of the Arctic now being taught at Fletcher. I do not know of any such comparable course but perhaps some one of our readers does. In which case I would be delighted to hear from him/her.

In any event, i hope that our course syllabus will be of interest and that some might even be moved to dip into the readings. There are some gripping accounts among them, comparable to the current best seller, Kingdom of Ice, which I just finished last week.
